A crown covers a damaged, cracked or root-canal-treated tooth to restore its shape and strength. The two most common types are zirconia and PFM (porcelain fused to metal), and the better choice depends mostly on which tooth is being restored.
Zirconia crowns
Zirconia is a strong ceramic with no metal inside. Light passes through it much as it does through a natural tooth, so there is no grey line at the gum margin over time. That makes zirconia a common choice for front teeth, and its strength also suits back teeth that take heavy chewing loads.
PFM crowns
A PFM crown has a metal core with porcelain baked over it. The metal provides strength and these crowns have a long track record. The limitation is cosmetic: as gums recede slightly with age, a dark line can become visible at the edge, which matters more on front teeth than on molars.
How the choice is usually made
- Front teeth: appearance dominates, so a metal-free option is often preferred.
- Back teeth: strength matters most, and both materials perform well.
- Grinding or clenching: if you grind your teeth, that changes the recommendation — mention it.
- Neighbouring teeth: the crown is shade-matched to the teeth beside it, whichever material is used.

The tooth is prepared, an impression or digital scan is taken, and the crown is made to fit precisely. A precise fit matters as much as the material: a crown that does not seal properly traps bacteria at the margin, which is what causes problems years later.
