Veneers vs Crowns: Which Do You Need?

Patients often ask for "veneers" when a crown would serve them better, or the other way round. Both are custom-made, tooth-coloured restorations — the difference is how much of the tooth they cover, and why.

What a veneer is

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Only a small amount of enamel is reshaped, sometimes none. Veneers change colour, shape, small chips, uneven edges and minor gaps on front teeth that are otherwise healthy. See dental veneers in Rajkot.

What a crown is

A crown covers the whole tooth above the gum, like a cap. The tooth is reshaped on all sides to make room for it. Crowns protect and strengthen teeth that are broken, heavily filled, cracked or root-canal treated, as well as improving their appearance. See crowns and bridges.

Choosing between them

The deciding factor is how much healthy tooth remains. A veneer relies on sound enamel for bonding and strength; a weakened tooth needs the full coverage of a crown.

Appearance

Modern veneers and all-ceramic or zirconia crowns can both look natural. On a front tooth, a veneer preserves more natural tooth and often gives the most lifelike translucency. A crown is chosen when strength must come first.

Planning matters more than the material

When several teeth are being changed, the result is planned as a whole smile: tooth length, the lip line, gum levels and the bite. A digital smile design preview lets you see the proposed shapes before anything is prepared. Whitening, if wanted, is done first so restorations are matched to the final shade.

Common questions

Do veneers damage teeth? Very little enamel is removed for most veneers, which is why they are chosen for healthy teeth. They are still a permanent decision, because the reshaped enamel does not grow back.

Can a veneer go on a root-canal tooth? Sometimes on a front tooth with plenty of structure left, but a crown is usually safer.

Which lasts longer? Both last many years with good care. Grinding is the main enemy of both, and a night guard protects them.
