What Affects Root Canal and Crown Costs?

Root canal treatment is not one procedure at one price: a front tooth and a back molar are different pieces of work, and the crown that follows is a separate step.

What changes the cost

Which tooth. Front teeth generally have one canal. Molars have several, sometimes with curved or narrow anatomy that takes longer to clean and seal.
First treatment or retreatment. Re-treating a tooth that was root-filled years ago is more involved than treating it the first time.
Condition of the tooth. Severe infection, a blocked canal or a fractured root all complicate the work.
Technique and equipment. Magnification and rotary instruments allow more precise cleaning of the canals.
Number of sittings. Some cases are completed in a single sitting; others need staging for clinical reasons.
The crown afterwards. A treated tooth usually needs a crown to prevent cracking, and crown material affects that part of the cost.

Why a crown is part of the plan

A root-canal-treated tooth can become brittle. A crown protects it from splitting and restores chewing strength. Skipping it to save money often ends with a cracked tooth that cannot be saved — and then the cost of replacing it entirely.

Root canal or extraction?

Removing the tooth looks cheaper on the day. But a gap allows the neighbouring teeth to drift, changes the bite and lets the bone shrink, and replacing the tooth with an implant or bridge costs more than saving it. A natural tooth root also keeps the bone stimulated in a way no replacement does.

Does the estimate include the crown, or only the root canal?
Can it be completed in one sitting for my tooth?
What are the chances this tooth can be saved?
What would replacement involve if it cannot?

Getting an estimate

The tooth has to be examined and X-rayed before anyone can say what it needs. If you are in pain, come in — the priority is getting you comfortable and knowing whether the tooth can be saved.
