What to Eat After a Tooth Extraction

1 October 20263 min read

The first few days after an extraction are about protecting the blood clot in the socket. What you eat — and how — makes a real difference to comfort and healing.

The first 24 hours

Wait until the numbness has worn off before eating, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. Then choose cool or lukewarm, soft food:

  • Curd, shrikhand (in moderation), lassi without ice
  • Smoothies eaten with a spoon — no straws
  • Mashed banana, papaya
  • Lukewarm soup, dal water
  • Custard, soft pudding

Avoid hot food and drinks on day one; heat can increase bleeding.

Days 2 to 4

Move to soft, everyday meals, chewing on the other side:

  • Khichdi, dal-rice, curd-rice
  • Upma, soft poha, idli
  • Soft-cooked vegetables, mashed potato
  • Scrambled eggs, soft paneer
  • Rotli soaked in dal or shaak

From about day 5

Most people return to normal food gradually, still favouring the other side. After surgical wisdom tooth removal, allow a few more days.

Foods to avoid for the first week

  • Hard, crunchy food: chikki, nuts, chips, khakhra, sev, papad
  • Small seeds and grains that lodge in the socket: sesame, rai-heavy tadka, popcorn
  • Very spicy food that stings the wound
  • Very hot food and drinks in the first day
  • Alcohol

Habits that disturb healing

  • Drinking through a straw
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco/gutka
  • Spitting forcefully or rinsing hard in the first 24 hours
  • Poking the socket with the tongue or fingers

These can dislodge the clot and cause a dry socket — pain that gets worse from day two to four. If that happens, call the clinic for a quick dressing.

Rinsing and cleaning

From the day after extraction, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals. Brush the other teeth normally the same evening, keeping away from the socket.

Common questions

Can I drink tea after an extraction? Yes, once it is lukewarm, usually from the second day. Avoid very hot tea on the first day.

When can I eat rotli normally? Usually after three to five days for a simple extraction, chewing on the other side.

Is ice cream okay? Soft ice cream without nuts is fine and soothing; eat it with a spoon, not through a cone held against the teeth.
