Wisdom Tooth Removal Recovery: Day by Day

1 October 20263 min read

Most people recover from wisdom tooth removal within a week. Knowing what each day usually looks like makes the process much less stressful, and helps you spot the few things that need a call to the clinic.

Day of surgery

  • Bite firmly on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes to form the clot.
  • Numbness lasts a few hours; avoid biting your lip or cheek.
  • Rest, keep your head raised, and use a cold pack on the cheek in 15-minute intervals.
  • Eat cool, soft food once the numbness fades — curd, smoothies, soup that is not hot.
  • No rinsing, spitting, straws, smoking or alcohol: all can dislodge the clot.
  • Take the prescribed painkiller before the anaesthetic wears off.

Days 1 to 3

  • Swelling peaks around day two or three — this is normal.
  • Mild bruising on the cheek can appear.
  • From day one, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals; do not swish hard.
  • Brush the other teeth normally; stay away from the socket.
  • Soft diet continues: khichdi, dal, mashed vegetables, eggs, soft rice.

Days 4 to 7

  • Swelling and stiffness reduce steadily; jaw opening improves.
  • Most patients return to normal food, chewing on the other side.
  • Stitches, if placed, either dissolve or are removed around day seven.
  • The socket begins to fill with new tissue from the edges.

Beyond a week

Discomfort should be gone. The socket takes a few weeks to close over fully and a few months to fill with bone. Food catching in the socket is common for a while; rinse it out gently rather than poking at it.

Warning signs — call us

  • Dry socket: pain that gets worse from day three to five, often throbbing, sometimes with a bad taste. The clot has been lost; a medicated dressing gives quick relief.
  • Swelling that increases after day three, or fever
  • Bleeding that does not stop with pressure
  • Numbness of the lip or tongue that persists beyond the first day
  • Pus or a bad smell

Surgical vs simple extraction

An impacted wisdom tooth removed surgically — with the gum opened and sometimes the tooth sectioned — causes more swelling than a simple extraction and may take a day or two longer to settle. Our oral and maxillofacial surgeon explains which applies to you beforehand. See wisdom tooth extraction in Rajkot.

Common questions

When can I go back to work or college? Many people return after one or two days for a simple extraction, two to three days for a surgical one.

Can I brush my teeth after wisdom tooth removal? Yes, from the same evening, gently and avoiding the socket. Clean teeth heal faster.

Why does the opposite side hurt too? Chewing on one side strains the jaw muscles. It eases as you return to normal chewing.

Wisdom tooth troubling you? Book an assessment — an X-ray shows whether it needs to come out and how.
