How Long Does a Root-Canal-Treated Tooth Last?

"How long will this tooth last now?" is one of the most common questions after a root canal. With the right restoration and care, a root-canal-treated tooth can last for decades — often for life.

What decides how long it lasts

1. The crown or final restoration

This matters more than anything else. A root-treated back tooth is more brittle than a live tooth, and without a crown it can fracture under chewing forces. Teeth crowned soon after treatment have much better long-term survival. See is a cap necessary after a root canal.

2. The quality of the root canal

Thorough cleaning and sealing of every canal prevents bacteria from re-entering. Magnification and rotary instruments help endodontists find and clean narrow or curved canals.

3. How much tooth remains

A tooth with plenty of healthy structure left is stronger than one that was mostly filling before treatment.

4. Gum health

Even a perfectly treated tooth can be lost to gum disease. Keeping the gums healthy keeps the tooth anchored.

5. Habits

Grinding, chewing ice or hard objects and opening packets with teeth all raise the risk of fracture.

Signs to get checked

  • Pain on biting that appears months or years later
  • Swelling or a small pimple on the gum near the tooth
  • A crown that feels loose or a filling that has fallen out
  • Darkening of the tooth (more noticeable on front teeth)

Problems caught early can often be fixed by redoing the root canal (retreatment) rather than removing the tooth.

Root canal or implant?

Both are reliable. A natural tooth saved with a root canal keeps its own root, ligament and bone; an implant replaces a tooth that cannot be saved. Where a tooth can be restored predictably, saving it is usually the better first choice. See root canal vs extraction.

Making it last

  • Have the crown fitted within a few weeks of the root canal
  • Brush twice daily and clean between teeth
  • Check-ups every six months, with periodic X-rays of treated teeth
  • A night guard if you grind

Common questions

Can a root canal fail after years? Occasionally, usually because of a leaking crown or filling, a crack, or a canal that was hard to reach. Retreatment can often save it.

Is a root-canal tooth "dead"? The nerve is removed, but the tooth stays attached to the bone by living ligament and continues to function.

Can the crown be replaced later? Yes. Crowns can be replaced when worn without redoing the root canal.
