Dental Care for Seniors in Rajkot: Dentures or Implants?

Dental needs change with age. Teeth that have served for sixty or seventy years are worn, old fillings and crowns reach the end of their life, gums recede, and medicines dry the mouth. Good dental care in later life is less about perfection and more about comfortable eating, clear speech and avoiding infection — and the options are better than many older patients expect.

Common problems after 60

  • Dry mouth from blood pressure, heart and other medicines, which raises the risk of decay and makes dentures uncomfortable. See dry mouth.
  • Root decay on receded gum margins.
  • Worn or cracked teeth and failing old restorations.
  • Gum disease that has progressed quietly for decades.
  • Missing teeth and loose dentures.
  • Difficulty cleaning because of arthritis or reduced vision.

Replacing missing teeth: the three options

Conventional dentures

The least invasive and quickest. Complete dentures replace a full arch; partial dentures clip onto remaining teeth. Fit changes as the bone shrinks, so relines are needed over the years. Lower complete dentures are the hardest to keep stable. See dentures in Rajkot.

Implant-supported dentures

Two to four implants hold a removable denture firmly. It still comes out for cleaning, which many older patients prefer, but it does not move while eating. Often the best balance of stability, simplicity and surgery for seniors. See implant-supported dentures.

Fixed implant teeth (All-on-4)

A permanently fixed bridge on four to six implants — the closest to natural teeth. Suits healthy, motivated patients who can clean around it. See All-on-4 dental implants.

Is age a barrier to implants?

No. Implants are placed successfully in patients in their seventies and eighties. What matters is general health, bone volume on the CBCT scan, controlled diabetes, and the ability to keep the implants clean. Blood thinners and osteoporosis medicines are discussed with your physician but rarely rule treatment out.

Keeping natural teeth going

  • Six-monthly check-ups and cleaning
  • High-fluoride toothpaste or fluoride varnish for root surfaces
  • Replacing failing crowns before the tooth beneath fractures
  • An electric toothbrush and interdental brushes for easier cleaning with stiff hands
  • Sipping water and sugar-free lozenges for dry mouth

Common questions

Are dentures the only option on a limited budget? Dentures are the simplest option; two implants to stabilise a lower denture are a middle path that many families find worthwhile. The doctor will set out what each involves.

My mother's denture is loose after many years. New denture or implants? A new denture helps for a while, but the bone keeps shrinking. If she struggles to eat, implants to hold the denture are the lasting answer, and age is not the deciding factor.

Can treatment be done gently for an anxious older patient? Yes. Shorter visits, careful local anaesthesia and clear explanations make most procedures comfortable. See painless dentistry.
