Saliva is not just moisture: it washes away food, neutralises acid and carries minerals that repair enamel. When the mouth is persistently dry, decay and gum problems rise sharply, often in people who have never had trouble before.
Common causes
- Medicines. Many common prescriptions reduce saliva flow — this is the most frequent cause.
- Dehydration, including from hot weather or too little water through the day.
- Mouth breathing, especially at night or with blocked sinuses.
- Diabetes and some other medical conditions.
- Smoking and tobacco, alcohol and caffeine.
- Ageing, partly because of the medicines that come with it.
Why it matters for your teeth
Without enough saliva, acid stays on the teeth for longer after eating, so decay can appear quickly and in unusual places — including at the gum line and around existing fillings and crowns. Gums become more prone to inflammation, and dentures fit less comfortably.
What helps
- Sip water through the day rather than drinking a lot occasionally.
- Ask about your medicines. Never stop a prescription, but your doctor may know an alternative or a timing change.
- Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva.
- Cut back on caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.
- Use a humidifier if you wake with a dry mouth.
- Avoid frequent sugary drinks — a dry mouth plus sugar is the fastest route to decay.
- Tell your dentist. More frequent check-ups and fluoride application may be recommended to protect the enamel.
Signs to mention
A sticky feeling in the mouth, difficulty swallowing dry food, a burning tongue, cracked lips, bad breath, or new cavities appearing despite unchanged brushing.
Common questions
Is dry mouth just part of getting older? Not by itself — it is usually medicines or a medical condition, which is worth identifying.
Can mouthwash help? Alcohol-based mouthwashes can make dryness worse. Ask about products designed for dry mouth.
Why am I suddenly getting cavities? Reduced saliva is one of the common explanations when decay appears after years without it.
