Braces do not mean giving up your favourite food, but some foods break brackets, bend wires and add weeks to treatment. Here is a practical guide for families in Rajkot.
Safe to eat
- Rotli, thepla and bhakhri — torn into small pieces
- Dal, kadhi, shaak and soft sabzi
- Rice, khichdi, pulao
- Idli, dhokla, khaman, upma, poha
- Curd, buttermilk, paneer, soft cheese
- Soft fruit: banana, papaya, chikoo, mango slices
- Eggs, soft-cooked pulses
- Pasta, noodles, soft breads
Eat with care (cut small, chew with back teeth)
- Apples, guava and pears — sliced, never bitten whole
- Corn — cut off the cob
- Sandwiches and pizza crusts — in small bites
- Cooked meat — cut small
Avoid during treatment
- Hard foods: chikki, nuts, hard khakhra, papad bitten whole, ice, hard sev and ganthiya by the handful
- Sticky foods: chewing gum, toffee, caramel, sticky sweets
- Chewy foods: hard breads and very chewy meat
- Habits: biting nails, pens or opening packets with teeth
A broken bracket stops that tooth moving until it is re-bonded, which is why avoiding hard food keeps treatment on schedule.
Sugar and staining
Sweets and sugary drinks are not banned, but sugar trapped around brackets causes white marks and cavities. Have sweets with meals rather than between them, and brush soon afterwards. During festival season, see our advice on sweets and teeth. If you have ceramic braces, tea, coffee and turmeric-heavy food can stain the clear ties.
After an adjustment
Teeth feel tender for two to three days. Choose soft food — khichdi, dal-rice, curd, soup — and take a mild painkiller if needed. The tenderness passes.
Cleaning after meals
Brush after eating where possible, or at least rinse well with water. An interdental brush cleans under the wire. See how to brush and floss properly.
Common questions
Can I eat chocolate with braces? Plain, soft chocolate in moderation, followed by brushing. Avoid chocolate bars with caramel or nuts.
What should I do if a bracket breaks? Keep it if it comes off, avoid chewing on that side and contact the clinic to re-bond it.
Are the food rules the same for aligners? No — aligners come out for meals, so there are no food limits, but teeth must be cleaned before the aligners go back in.
