Many people visit a dentist only when something hurts. A routine check-up is different: it is designed to find problems while they are small, painless and simple to fix. Here is what to expect.
1. Your history
The dentist asks about any pain, sensitivity or bleeding, your general health and medicines (diabetes, blood pressure, blood thinners and pregnancy all matter), and habits such as tobacco or grinding.
2. Examination of the teeth
Each tooth is checked for decay, cracks, worn areas and the condition of existing fillings and crowns. An intraoral camera can show you on screen exactly what the dentist sees.
3. Gum check
The gums are examined for bleeding, swelling and recession, and the spaces between gum and tooth (pockets) may be measured. This is how early gum disease is found — see bleeding gums.
4. Soft tissues and oral screening
The tongue, cheeks, palate, floor of the mouth and lips are checked for ulcers, patches or lumps. This matters especially for tobacco users — see tobacco and gutka: effects on the mouth.
5. Bite and jaw
How the teeth meet, signs of grinding, and any jaw clicking or pain.
6. X-rays when needed
Decay between teeth and problems below the gum are invisible to the eye. Small bitewing X-rays are taken periodically, not at every visit, and an OPG or CBCT scan only when there is a specific reason. See dental X-rays: safety and frequency.
7. Cleaning
Scaling removes tartar above and just below the gum line, followed by polishing to remove surface stains. See teeth cleaning in Rajkot.
8. Your plan
You are told what was found, what (if anything) needs treatment and how urgent it is, and when to come back. Nothing should be started without your agreement.
How long it takes
About 30 to 45 minutes for a check-up and routine cleaning.
How often
Every six months for most adults and children. People with gum disease, diabetes, many fillings or a dry mouth may be advised every three to four months.
Common questions
Do I need a check-up if nothing hurts? Yes — decay and gum disease are painless in the early stages, when treatment is simplest.
Is the cleaning painful? Most people feel vibration and water, not pain. Sensitive areas can be numbed.
Can I bring my whole family together? Yes. Book consecutive appointments so children and parents are seen in one visit.
