Wearing Clear Aligners: Hours, Cleaning, First Week

1 October 20263 min read

Invisible aligners move teeth with a series of custom trays, each slightly different from the last. The technology is precise, but the results depend on one thing you control: wearing them.

How many hours a day

20 to 22 hours every day. Aligners come out only to eat, to drink anything other than plain water, and to clean your teeth. Leaving them out for long periods slows the movement and can make the next set fit poorly.

A practical rule: if they are not in your mouth, they should be in their case.

The first week

  • Tightness. Each new set presses firmly for a day or two. This means the teeth are moving.
  • Lisp. A slight change in speech is common for a few days and fades as your tongue adapts.
  • Awareness. The edges may feel noticeable; they smooth with time, and the clinic can adjust a sharp edge.
  • Attachments. Small tooth-coloured bumps are bonded to some teeth to help the aligners grip. They are barely visible.

Switching to a new set at night lets the first hours of tightness pass while you sleep.

Eating and drinking

  • Remove aligners for every meal and snack.
  • Brush or at least rinse before putting them back, so food is not trapped against the teeth.
  • Avoid tea, coffee and coloured drinks with aligners in — they stain the trays and trap sugar against the teeth.
  • Hot drinks can warp aligners.

Cleaning the aligners

  • Rinse in cool water whenever you remove them.
  • Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap, morning and night.
  • Do not use hot water or toothpaste with abrasives, which scratch and cloud them.
  • Keep them in the case, never wrapped in a napkin — that is how most aligners get lost.

Keeping treatment on schedule

  • Change sets on the planned day.
  • Attend review appointments so progress can be checked against the digital plan.
  • Tell the clinic if a set does not fit snugly.

Patients from outside Rajkot can often receive several sets at once and attend fewer reviews. See invisible aligners in Rajkot and our comparison of aligners and braces.

Common questions

Can I sleep without my aligners? No. Night is a large share of the wearing time.

What if I lose an aligner? Wear the previous set and contact the clinic; the next set may be started early or the lost one replaced.

Will I need a retainer afterwards? Yes. Retainers keep the new position stable — see why retainers matter.
