Professional teeth whitening is safe when it is carried out after a dental examination, by a dentist, on healthy teeth and gums. The check beforehand is what makes it safe: whitening over an untreated cavity or inflamed gums causes pain and solves nothing.
What whitening can change
Whitening lifts stains built up in the enamel — from tea, coffee, tobacco and ordinary ageing. Results vary from person to person, because the starting shade and the type of staining differ.
